Heavy Kollector

Brand & Print Design

Heavy Kollector was an independent heavy metal magazine dedicated to showcasing underground and emerging bands through interviews, photography, album reviews, and editorial features. The publication was created to support the heavy music community by giving artists a platform to share their stories while connecting fans with new music and local scenes.

As co-founder and creative director, I was responsible for developing and maintaining the magazine's visual identity across both print and digital platforms. My role included designing magazine layouts, creating promotional graphics, and directing the brand's creative vision. Every issue is designed to deliver a cohesive visual experience that reflected the energy and culture of the heavy metal community.

Design Challenge

The primary objective was to create a bold and recognizable visual identity that strongly represented the underground heavy metal music scene and created a cult following of the brand.

  • Create a brand inspired by 1980s heavy metal aesthetics without appearing tacky or costume-like.

  • Each magazine cover needed to maintain a consistent connection to the Heavy Kollector brand and mascot while introducing a unique concept, composition, and visual story for every issue.

Brand Strategy

The brand identity took inspiration from 1980s magazines such as RIP Magazine and Hit Parader, with a Halloween-inspired color palette of orange, purple, and black. Together, these elements created a memorable identity that differentiated Heavy Kollector from traditional heavy metal publications.

  • Create a brand inspired by 1980s heavy metal aesthetics without appearing tacky or costume-like.

  • Develop a visual identity that works seamlessly across both print and digital platforms.

  • Each magazine cover needed to maintain a consistent connection to the Heavy Kollector brand and mascot while introducing a unique concept, composition, and visual story for every issue.

Design Challenge

Rather than following a fixed cover template, every issue was designed as its own original illustrated artwork.

Each cover featured a hand-drawn and painted illustration with the Heavy Kollector mascot placed into a completely new scene inspired by the issue's featured content. The unique covers and minimal stock allowed every magazine to feel like a collectible piece .

The cover  provided:

  • A unique illustrated cover for every issue

  • Consistent use of the Heavy Kollector mascot

  • Strong brand recognition despite changing compositions

  • A collectible identity that encouraged readers to own multiple issues
